Our mission trip this year went to Omaha, Nebraska, in partnership with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.  While there, we served in partnership with an organization called Omaha Rapid Response, which aims to provide assistance to those in need after a disaster.  They are a faith-based organization formed through the partnership of many Omaha-area churches.

The work we did on the trip focused on cleaning up people's properties after tornadoes hit.  The week before we arrived in Omaha, there had been a tornado and severe windstorm in Auburn, Nebraska, that had knocked down and damaged many trees, so we spent our first two days clearing tree debris from  properties.  The next several days were spent picking debris out of the yards of people who had been hit by a tornado 2 years ago.  They had rebuilt their homes, but their property was still littered with the remains of the devastation.

Seeing the relief on the people’s faces that came simply from us being present and picking up trash was remarkable, and truly a reminder that working in the service of God is seldom flashy or dramatic, but it is always important.
