COM Report for August 27, 2009

COMMITTEE ON MINISTRY REPORT  

August 27, 2009

 

 

ACTION ITEMS:  The Committee on Ministry recommends the following–

 

  1.            Motion that the Presbytery grant Honorable Retirement status to Rudy Beard, pastor of FPC, Jefferson City, effective 9/1/09.

 

            RATIONALE:    The Congregation voted to concur with Rudy’s request for retirement at a duly called Congregational Meeting on 7/19/09. 

             

  2.            Motion that the Presbytery grant Honorable Retirement status to Brian Butler, pastor of FPC, Brookfield and Macon PC, effective 2/1/10.

 

            RATIONALE:    The Congregations voted to concur with Brian’s request for retirement at duly called Congregational Meetings on 6/28/09. 

             

  3.            Motion that Judy King be re-commissioned as Evangelist to Pike County             for three years, effective 8/27/09. 

 

RATIONALE:  Judy received a favorable review for her work with the churches of Pike County following the Book of Order required evaluation with COM; a three-year commission was recommended at the 7/14/09 meeting of COM.

 

  4.            Motion that the Parish Associate relationship between the Rev. Lou Wollenberg and

Macon PC, be dissolved effective this date and that a Parish Associate relationship be established between the Rev. Lou Wollenberg and Coates Street PC, Moberly effective this date

 

RATIONALE:  The Sessions of both churches involved have made these requests of COM and they were approved at the 7/14/09 COM meeting. 

 

  5.            Motion that Presbytery appoint Dave Henry, Associate Pastor of FPC, Jefferson

            City, as moderator of said church effective 9/1/09. 

 

            RATIONALE:  FPC is in the process of seeking an interim senior pastor and to maintain

a smooth transition, COM makes this request until such time as the interim is hired, moves to the field, and is examined for membership, if desired, in order to be granted permission to moderate.

 

  6.            Motion to grant the Rev. Andy O’Dowd permission to labor outside our bounds in

            New Harmony and Trinity Presbyteries in South Carolina to perform pulpit supply

            as he serves in a secular position with the Veterans Administration there.

  7.            Motion to grant the request of the Session of FPC, Memphis for permission for

Elders Dallace and Bonnie Schumacher to officiate at the Lord’s Supper for the following dates in 2010:  1/10, 4/4, 7/11, and 10/3.    

 

RATIONALE:  Dallace and Connie Schumacher were trained by the Rev. Mary Ellen Waychoff on 6/27/09 at Marshall, Covenant PC at the MUP training for elders to officiate at communion for the western side of MUP. 

 

  8.            Motion to approve the Terms of Call report for 2009 of MUP clergy and CLPs.

            (See additional report which was approved by COM at their 7/14/09 meeting.)

 

  9.            Motion to examine for membership United Methodist minister, the Rev. Ed Hankinson, who has been appointed to the First United Methodist/Presbyterian Church of Montgomery City and that he be appointed moderator.

 

10.            Motion to grant the same privileges as a CLP in the PCUSA to Mark Spence, a Licensed Local Pastor in the United Methodist Church and appointed to serve as pastor for the Wellsville United Methodist Presbyterian Church, and that after completing our CLP equivalent in polity, that he be appointed moderator there. 

           

            (See rationale under #11 for both 10 and 11).

 

11.              Motion to grant the same privileges as a CLP in the PCUSA to Carolyn Hoffman, a Licensed Local Pastor in the United Methodist Church and appointed to serve as pastor for the Bellflower United Methodist Church, and currently also serving as lay pastor to the FPC of Bellflower, and that after completing our CLP equivalent in polity, that she be appointed moderator of the FPC of Bellflower. 

 

            RATIONALE:  Both of these candidates have received the equivalent of our CLP training in the Methodist denomination with the exception of PCUSA polity. 

            In the Methodist Church, there are three levels of lay pastors to churches.  They are:

            a.  Lay speaker

            b.  Certified Lay Minister (cannot perform weddings or the sacraments)

            c.  Licensed Local Pastor (can perform weddings and the sacraments in their local

                 appointment.)

            Mark and Carolyn were examined by COM at the 7/14/09 meeting and were approved.  The polity training is being arranged with the Rev. Dr. Cecil Culverhouse; all three of our Methodist colleagues will be participating in this training.
