Mission Teams Committee (MTC) Meeting

April 14, 2009

Trinity Presbyterian Church

 

Committee Members Present:  Pastor Bob Balwanz, Pastor John Becker, Ann Bouchard, Pastor Nancy Carle, Rebecca McElroy, Bruce Oliver, and Pastor Ron Roberts

Also Present:  David Meerse, Interim General Presbyter, and Bess Gamm, Criminal

  Justice

 

 

Bruce Oliver welcomed everyone and opened the meeting with prayer at 9:05 am.

 

OLD BUSINESS

The minutes for the January 20, 2009 meeting were approved.  The Church and Society Team will present a 1-hour educational program at the August 27, 2009 MUP meeting.

 

TEAM REPORTS

Church and Society/Social Justice and Peacemaking:  Ron reported efforts continue in the Missouri legislative arena.  A rescheduled Legislative Issues seminar will be held on Tuesday, April 21st at First Jefferson City from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm.  A New York City trip to a U.N. seminar discussing the Israel/Palestine conflict is being planned for December 8-10, 2009.

 

Criminal Justice:  Bess reported the Team is planning a meeting with Patch program leaders in Chillicothe on April 28th.

 

Disaster Preparedness and Response:  David reported a ‘regional’ training meeting was conducted March 9th  David further clarified the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) monies is for ‘unmet needs’ not satisfied by other disaster assistance programs.

 

Family Enrichment Ministries:  Rebecca reported that mentoring continues with good success although activity has slowed in winter months.  There continues to be a waiting list of children for mentors.

 

Hungarian Reformed Church (HRC):  Bruce reported the Team continues to focus support for Ukraine ‘private’ schools through the end of this school year using a matching challenge grant being offered.

 

Media Promotion:  Joe Weston submitted the Easter television ad campaign was successfully completed.  The Team arranged for many not-for-profit ads at little or no expense in this campaign.

Senior High and Mid-High Youth:  Ann reported the Senior Highs met March 7-8th and a Mid-High retreat is being planned on April 24-25th at Covenant Point.

 

Small Church Christian Education:  Nancy reported Pat Roller conducted a very successful Vacation Bible School (VBS) workshop at Covenant Point on March 7th.  Twenty-five people attended from nine different churches with curricula distributed for four VBS programs.  In addition, quarterly curricula CDs are being distributed for small membership church Sunday school programs.

 

PRESBYTERY MEETING ‘TIME REQUESTS’

The following mission teams requested time for the May 19th MUP meeting at Covenant Point:  Criminal Justice; Disaster Preparedness and Response; Family Enrichment

  Ministries; and Hungarian Reformed Church – 20 minutes

Table space is being requested for Criminal Justice, Family Enrichment Ministries,

  Hungarian Reformed Church, and Small Church CE Teams.

 

NEW BUSINESS

Bruce reported May 3-9 is “National Corrections Employee Week” and suggested corrections employees being remembered by our churches in addition to those imprisoned in the correction system.

 

David Henry is considering an application for a new “Peru” mission team later this year.  David has traveled to Peru for 9+ years and has now enlisted members from several of our churches to participate in this mission work.

 

Bruce encouraged all Mission Teams to begin generating digital photo albums of their work for future submission to the Communications Team for the purpose of producing a Mission Teams video presentation for use within the Presbytery.  This video would replace our request at the January meeting for the MUP office to create a new Missions Team tri-fold brochure.

 

A “Ministries of Compassion” application for $500 from Presbyterian Childrens’ Services was submitted by Pam Adkison, Coordinator of the Hannibal Mentoring program and endorsed by Pastor P.J. Southam of the Family Enrichment Ministries Team.  Bruce reviewed the history of the “Ministries of Compassion” program.  Ron Roberts moved to approve this “Ministries of Compassion” application be forwarded to Council with a second by John Becker.  Motion approved. 

 

There being no further business the meeting closed with prayer by Pastor Nancy Carle at 9:55 am.
