Rob Hoell, from First Presbyterian Church in Fulton, has been named as Covenant Point Camp Director. His degree in Parks, Recreation and Tourism, as well has his experience with being a part of a family business has prepared him well for this responsibility. Not letting the grass grow under his feet, he is starting today with this new endeavor. Here is a note from him.

Hello fellow Presbyterians!

I am super excited to be the next Camp Director for Covenant Point Camp and Retreat Center! I am thankful to be able to serve YOU, the members of the Presbytery, and am looking forward to getting to visit and meet you in your churches and at camp. The invitation is open for you to schedule and visit camp with your church or group, but I want to extend that invitation in reverse. I want to come visit your congregations and share my enthusiasm for camp in person and get to know you! Let me know if there is a good time for your congregation to “Meet the Camp Director” or I will be in contact to set something up in 2012. I believe camp is a great place to get away from your everyday routine and connect with God.

God has been drawing me to camping ministry since my first camp and conference experiences as a senior high. I have been involved at Covenant Point off and on in the past: as a Senior High from First Presbyterian Church in Fulton up to my recent roles as Mom, Dad and Me Program Coordinator and Camp Committee Moderator. I have various other camp experiences as well and even met my wife at a camp. Our three girls, Avrie (6), Quinn (3), Ella (1), are very excited to be part of camp. I am ready to bring new ideas to Covenant Point and to be the new face of camp for the Presbytery.

Thank you,
Rob Hoell

Hi Friends!

One thing I hate to hear coming out of the mouth of a Presbyterian is “I’m just an elder.” Hearing this statement makes my blood pressure go up. I have been known to scold the unfortunate person who said “I’m just an elder” for not appreciating their high office and launch into an exposition of the unique role of the elder in the Reformed tradition. If we are going to fulfill our potential as a denomination in the years ahead, we must redeem the role of elder as spiritual leader and invest more in the training and support of our elders. Our system of church government is arranged so that elders always outnumber pastors in the governing body of the local congregation, therefore no church will rise above the level of its elders.

If properly trained, encouraged, and supported elders can do great things. In Africa where the church is growing faster than they can train pastors many congregations are led by the elders. One pastor may oversee ten or more congregations and the day to day life of the congregation is in the hands of the elders. Though we are blessed with more pastors than the African churches, we still need to mine the leadership gifts of our elders to rise to the challenges before us. To be a Presbyterian elder is a unique and high calling, and there’s no “just’ about it!

Peace!

Joan S. Gray
Moderator, 217th GA

The 2007 Festival of Sharing held at the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia was a great success. Thanks be to God! Preliminary totals are that 44,000 Pounds of potatoes, 20,000 pounds of rice and 20,000 pounds of beans were bagged and packed for shipping. In adddition, 120 local agencies received support, one and a half (53 foot long) semi-trailers were loaded with school kits alone, the Quilt Auction brought in $34,000.00, and even more significantly, between 3,500 and 4,000 participated in the ecumenical worship service on Saturday, October 20, 2007.

This annual inter-faith, state-wide ingathering event, is held on the third Saturday in October each year. Mark your calendar for October 18, 2007 and invite others in your congregation to get involved in this inspiring event, where groups and individuals can personally join in sharing God's blessings with the entire world.

The Festival is really a two day event, with Friday used as the set up day for volunteers, and the overnight Youth Fest Retreat. For the full listing of events go to the website http://www.umocm.com, for more highlights of the 2007 Festival and plans as they are made for 2008.

The Quilt Auction: Churches all across the state of Missouri work to prepare and donate quilts for the auction. The Quilt Auction provides significant support for the “Tools and Blankets” program of the Church World Service (CWS). During the past 25 years, more than 2700 quilts have been made and sold during the Quilt Auction. Some have brought in more than $600.000 for the Church World Blanket Fund.

Backpacks of Love: These kits are used by children between the ages of 4-10 who have experienced a crisis and are being placed in foster care.

PURPOSES of THE FESTIVAL OF SHARING
*meet and challenge injustice through advocacy and systemic change
