PDA Responds to Flooding in Pakistan

Pakistan flooding Aug 2010

People in Pakistan are seeking dry ground. Help them find hope. Pakistanis have suffered numerous natural and human-caused disasters.  Now over 1,400 people are dead and more than 1.5 million displaced. Presbyterians have ministered in Pakistan since before it was a nation and stand with them now.  Help bring God’s healing through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) and our ecumenical partners to provide food packages, shelter materials, and other essentials, including healthcare.

Give – through your local Presbyterian congregation, on the secure PC(USA) Web site , call 1-800-728-7228 or send a check to: Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), P O Box 643700, Pittsburgh, PA 15264-3700 Designate account DR000038 – Pakistan

Act - Congregations and individuals can put together hygiene kits and baby kits for Church World Service to distribute.

Pray - for the people of Pakistan and those trying to bring aid. Let us join our hearts in prayer:  God of compassion, please watch over the people of Pakistan, and weave out of these terrible events wonders of goodness and grace. Surround those who have been affected by tragedy with a sense of your present love, and hold them in faith. Though they are lost in grief, may they find you and be comforted; guide us as a church to find ways of providing assistance that heal and gives hope. Help us remember that when one of your children suffers we all suffer. Through Jesus Christ who was dead, but lives and rules this world with you.  Amen.

I drove to Novinger (I couldn’t get through on 63 due to the damage north of Kirksville) and got there about 4:00 p.m. Friday, May 15. Novinger sustained some damage but Emergency Management people had hit the ground running early yesterday morning and had already organized volunteers and townspeople who had done extensive clean-up by the time I got there.  Read more »

Storms, Tonadoes and Wildfires Over the past several weeks, severe storms and tornadoes have ravaged parts of the United States, particularly across the South, where several people have been killed and homes damaged or destroyed. In addition, wildfires in Texas, Oklahoma and South Carolina have destroyed or damaged some 170 homes. Where is your Treasure?

As Presbyterians prepare to take the One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) offering, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) staff express their thankfulness for the continued generosity of Presbyterians in the United States that enables us – together – to witness the healing love of Christ to disaster survivors around the world. This year the OGHS theme is “Where is your Treasure?” See how your treasure is helping disaster survivors find hope out of the chaos of the disasters that have impacted their lives.
Presbyterian Volunteer Village Managers are needed to help oversee the management and function of the Presbyterian Volunteer Villages throughout the U.S. Gulf Coast.  Responsibilities include providing hospitality, and worksite management for Presbyterian volunteers serving hurricane survivors in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. Volunteer Village Managers are volunteers, who receive a nominal per diem to cover food and incidentals–housing and transportation are provided within the village. Learn more and get an application.

“Out of Chaos, Hope” Feb 2009

3 yrs after Hurricanes Katrina & Rita–recovery go on. Report of Jan 25-31, 2009 trip to New Orleans by Kathy Montgomery: “Known as “Blue Angels of Hope”, 20 members of Missouri Union Presbytery, from 9 different churches, and 3 friends joined Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) and traveled to New Orleans, LA. They sucessfully provided help and hope to survivors of the 2005 hurricanes.  Their reconstruction efforts were welcomed and appreciated as survivors continue to rebuild their lives.  It’s truly lagniappe (God’s grace/gift) to see first-hand the appreciation and renewed hope when a family home in the lower 9th ward is restored and dedicated. In one week, the hard-working Blue Angels assisted with 4 homes, each with unique challenges.  Even though our group was experienced, skilled AND very motivated, some of the tasks were quite demanding. The Blue Angels hung, taped, and mudded sheet rock; installed bamboo flooring; installed ceramic floor tile; installed insulation; painted and trimmed rooms; framed windows and doors; and tackled two roofs – removing shingles, re-decking, sheeting and re-shingling.  One roof was actually raised and suspended before this was accomplished.  Whew! So much work, but SO many smiles, so much fellowship and an awesome witness for Christ… (Not to mention, aches and groans from the Blue Angels!) Mission Team volunteers stayed at the Olive Tree Volunteer Village (formerly Eastminster Presbyterian Church) in east New Orleans.  This area was also heavily damaged in 2005 and has remaining problems.  At Olive Tree, we shared space and friendship with 34 Presbyterians from New Castle Presbytery (Delaware/Maryland) and 11 Canadians.  PDA currently operates 4 volunteer villages along the Gulf Coast and provides hospitality and connections to families in need for volunteer work teams. Just think how much more could have been accomplished with more Blue Angels from MUP! Give prayerful consideration to joining the next mission trip to the Gulf Coast in 2010.
