PDA Rapid Info Network 4/27/09

Storms, Tonadoes and Wildfires Over the past several weeks, severe storms and tornadoes have ravaged parts of the United States, particularly across the South, where several people have been killed and homes damaged or destroyed. In addition, wildfires in Texas, Oklahoma and South Carolina have destroyed or damaged some 170 homes. PDA has been in contact with all areas affected to offer financial support from One Great Hour of Sharing and spiritual support by the presence of NRT members who as experienced disaster responders, can also share their knowledge of response.PDA is blessed to have a team of committed volunteers who actively serve the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) known as the National Response Team (NRT).  NRT  members represent PDA following a disaster in the United States and represent the care and concern of the whole Presbyterian community. They provide support to affected presbyteries and synods as they assess the impact of the disaster on both the church and the community. They assist in connecting presbyteries to recovery resources.

Ken McKenzie, pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rome, GA, has been named Volunteer of the Year by The Northwest Georgia Council of Volunteer Administrators.  We are proud of McKenzie for this award but are especially thankful for his service. Ken McKenzie and NRT member Doug Macdonald are currently helping PDA with the South Carolina wildfires.  Since the beginning of the year, 29 NRT members have responded to 14 disaster situations, some multiple times. We are the Church together  — praying, caring, planning, serving  and caring for congregations affected by disaster as they reach out and serve their stricken communities.  NRT members are in integral part of this work.
